Marketer or Marketeer? Which is it?

The word ‘Marketeer’ is my pet hate. And I’m wondering if it irritates anyone else too. To me, the word ‘marketeer’ sounds like ‘musketeer’ which conjures up images of a soldier in battle. I mean, I have my struggles but NO.

‘Marketeer’ isn’t totally wrong if your job is to sell products or services in a market (could be intangible, of course).

English versus Dutch use of Marketer or Marketeer

In the English-speaking world, the word ‘marketer’ seems to be the preferred choice, whereas here in the Netherlands ‘marketeer‘ is preferred (in Dutch, it’s officially ‘marketeer’, but it’s also used when people speak English too).

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, ‘marketer’ is more about advertising and promotion and not necessarily direct selling (as with the word ‘marketeer’).

So hence, ‘marketer’ does, in fact, make more sense (well, at least to me as a native English copywriter!).

The Battle Continues…
