Monday Rant – The Irony of Communication and Marketing Professionals

Sometimes I check out the competition simply to see what fellow marketing/communication professionals are doing in the field. Nowadays everyone is an ‘expert’ and as a result, you’d think that the competition would be higher. Or is it? There seems to be a great drive to ‘communicate’ just because we have the channels in which to do so. Sadly, I’ve seen communication ‘experts’ with spelling errors on their profiles, or video posts about, well, pretty much nothing relevant in the field. So, the two points I want to touch upon today Frequency and Quality. Firstly, the frequency of updates on social channels does not equate ‘expert’ status. In fact, it’s down-right irritating. And secondly, quality is of utmost importance and often forgotten (even by those immersed in these fields – ironically). Nowadays, adding value through updates should be a priority. Personally, I opt to wait and first let ideas grow before sharing them online (I’ve learned from my mistakes!). That way, I know I have something important/valuable to say because I actually thought long and hard about it prior to posting. So, this is my Monday morning rant – to urge you to make a meaningful contribution to the communication channels you use and to ‘practice what you preach’.
