Are you looking for a freelance native English Communication Advisor in the Netherlands or beyond?

My name is Elizabeth Joss-Bethlehem and I’ve been working as a Communication Advisor and Specialist for over a decade now.

What does a Native English Internal Communication Advisor do?

A native English Internal Communication Advisor is someone who helps communication teams on a freelance or contractual basis. The person supports all forms of English-language communication directed at employees. This may include actual advising on internal communication topics or subject areas, but also frequently includes actual execution of communication tasks.

Internal Communication Advisors know that each and every audience is different and responds to different types of communication in a different manner. Hence, as a native English Internal Communication Advisor, it’s up to me to research the style and tone of the audience — what works and what doesn’t when it comes to written communication. This is very important in order to get a sense of the audience. For example, general internal emails, HR announcements, or employee interviews can all have a very different tone and style (and format of course!). Added to this, some companies in the Netherlands (or Europe) lean towards UK English use, whereas others with a US clientele may lean more towards US English.

Working as a native English Internal Communication Advisor is exciting and challenging! And no two days are the same — just the way I like to work!

What tasks can a Native English Internal Communication Advisor assist you with?

As a native English Internal Communication Advisor, I’m engaged in a range of communication tasks for companies in the Netherlands and beyond. For example, I write:

  • Human Resource (HR) stories and people announcements i.e. new joiner, promotion, departure updates, interviews etc.;
  • Internal announcements or inspiring stories for intranets;
  • Newsletters for internal purposes (I edit, write, and also design newsletters from scratch or simply help improve the design of newsletter templates);
  • Emails updates for internal purposes;
  • Emails or announcements on any changes to company procedures;
  • Interviews with employees for intranets or company magazines (I conduct, write, and edit interviews);
  • Various internal reports, templates, or guides on a myriad of subjects;
  • Speeches for company leaders and scripts for internal (or even online) events;
  • And much more (if in doubt, please ask!).

In addition to the abovementioned tasks I do for companies, teaching is a great passion of mine (I’m a qualified teacher) and regularly train and coach Communication teams on internal communication.

What internal communication topics do I write about?

As a native English internal Communication Advisor, I write messages on almost anything concerning a company’s employees. The subject areas which are particularly popular right now are:

  • Sustainability stories – on various levels (a very hot topic for many of my clients right now) – I’ve also written an ESG / Sustainability Report for one of my clients;
  • LGBTQ+ stories;
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) Messages;
  • Outreach, charity, and social events updates;
  • Human Resources topics;
  • Innovative company practices;
