28 December 2012. That’s the date I left South Africa to move to Europe. Over ten years ago. All alone with three items — one suitcase, a laptop bag, and a handbag. And what a journey it has been! I’ve discovered so many amazing things along the way about myself and others.

Sometimes we don’t take enough time to reflect on what we have achieved and on the work we have done. Just sit back, take the time to be, and absorb all that is. That’s what I’ve been doing tonight. I was going through all my old photos and reminiscing.

I encourage all young people to take a risk involving moving somewhere or getting out of their comfort zone and doing something that scares them. You never know what challenges you’ll encounter. Sure, there will be many tears shed and many hard times (I recall not being able to buy an Ikea mattress to sleep on — or a proper meal, for that matter — in my first few months of living in the Netherlands). But there will also be many happy priceless moments.

One important lesson I learned along the way is to be kind to others. And if they aren’t kind to you, keep moving in the other direction. Life is too short. You don’t want to be held back by those who don’t lift you up, inspire, and support you. And stick with those who do — they are worth their weight in gold!

Thank you, Mom, for instilling in me such drive and determination to never settle, to never give up, and ‘go big or go home’!
